An instructional designer creates effective, engaging learning experiences by applying principles from education, psychology, and design. Unlike teachers or trainers, instructional designers work behind the scenes rather than delivering instruction to a live audience.

You will also see the title "learning experience designer" (LXD) used for very similar work. I have met people over the years who insist that instructional design and LXD are fundamentally different, but in my experience, those people usually are not very familiar with the history of instructional design or what good instructional design actually looks like. A few distinctions worth knowing:

Corporate vs. higher ed. Corporate IDs typically build interactive eLearning with rapid authoring tools on fast timelines. Higher ed IDs collaborate closely with faculty, often converting face-to-face courses into online formats directly inside a learning management system. Government roles tend to resemble one of these two models.

In-house vs. vendor. In-house designers support one organization and often wear multiple hats, sometimes including LMS administration and program evaluation. Vendor-side designers serve multiple clients and are more likely to work in specialized roles where analysis, design, and development are split across a team.

Self-employed vs. full-time. Freelancing can offer flexibility and higher earning potential, but you are also running a small business: marketing, contracts, taxes, and client relationships. Full-time roles trade some of that upside for stability.

That said, these outcomes are far more common for candidates who can demonstrate applied skills through a strong portfolio, rather than relying on credentials or experience alone.

Is instructional design right for you?

Instructional design tends to fit people who enjoy writing, working with technology, collaborating with others, and helping people perform better. The role blends analysis, writing, design, and development, and most people gravitate toward some parts more than others.

I will be honest about my own experience here. I have learned that I enter flow state much more easily with development work than with instructional design work. I can develop until 2am with music on and still be in the zone, but the design and subject-matter side takes more effort for me to focus on, so I have to create more space for it. Knowing which side of the work energizes you will help you pick the right roles. If you are still weighing the decision, pay attention to which parts of the work you look forward to and which parts drain you.

An honest note on purpose

Some instructional designers report feeling a lack of purpose, particularly in organizations that commission training without confirming that learning is the right solution. You do not need a degree or certification for most corporate instructional design roles. Hiring decisions are driven primarily by portfolio quality and demonstrated design judgment. Higher education, government, and regulated environments are the exceptions, where formal credentials can be a gatekeeper.

Structured programs of any kind can accelerate your progress by providing guided exposure to theory, built-in project opportunities, access to mentors and peers, and help building a competitive portfolio. When I ask hiring managers what they look for in instructional design portfolios, the number one answer is that they want to see projects that actually solve real problems. Because many people are trying to enter the field, a related job title or a well-written resume alone is rarely enough. Most hiring managers screen quickly, prioritizing portfolios and work samples over credentials. Competitive candidates show that they can:

In years past, portfolios with clean slides and basic interactivity were often enough to get hired. Today, hiring managers see dozens of those every week. What stands out now is evidence of judgment:

No. AI is not replacing instructional designers, but it is replacing instructional designers who cannot use AI. Hiring managers now treat AI competency as a baseline expectation, and candidates who cannot demonstrate it are having a harder time getting hired.

How do instructional designers use AI in their workflows?

Using ChatGPT occasionally is not enough. Hiring managers want to hear how AI is woven into your process. For example:

Those skills were already helping me and my team work faster and smarter, and they were helping many of the IDs we worked with make a bigger impact in their roles. That trend has only accelerated since. Designers who embed AI as a natural part of their workflow output significantly more (and higher-quality) work than non-AI-augmented designers, and the market is noticing.

This does not mean outsourcing your thinking or your design decisions. What matters in interviews is being able to explain how AI supported your process, not which tools you subscribed to.

What do AI-enabled portfolio projects look like?

Candidates who feature AI-enabled learning experiences in their portfolios are consistently seeing stronger job search outcomes than those who do not. Aspiring IDs who build Custom GPTs or Storyline 360 experiences with AI-powered characters tend to stand out in interviews and are often considered for higher-level roles earlier in their search.

These projects show things that typical Storyline courses do not. An AI simulation project demonstrates instructional design thinking, scenario design skill, prompt engineering, and AI readiness, alongside Storyline and multimedia development, user experience thinking, and performance-based learning design. Most traditional portfolio courses incorporate AI for visuals at best, so a working AI experience puts you in a different category.

Here is what that can look like in practice:

One example comes from Catherine Schwebel, an instructional designer who built a custom GPT to support clinicians in a healthcare context. That project helped her land a part-time AI instructional design role. Later, when applying for a full-time position, she created a custom GPT as part of the employer's sample project request. During the interview process, the hiring team explicitly referenced the custom GPT as a reason her work stood out. Not because it was "AI," but because it demonstrated problem-solving, judgment, and an understanding of real-world constraints.

How Do You Become an Instructional Designer? (Step-by-Step)

You become an instructional designer by learning the core theory, building technical and visual design skills, creating a portfolio that demonstrates judgment, networking with the field, gaining real experience, and running a focused job search. Here is each step in detail.

Step 1: Learn instructional design theory (in order to apply it)

Theory still matters, but hiring managers are not looking for candidates who can recite models from memory. They test whether you can apply theory to real problems and explain your design decisions clearly.

A few notes on using these well. ADDIE looks sequential on paper, but in practice you will move fluidly between phases: a needs assessment and audience analysis up front, then storyboarding and iterating as you go. Gagne's events give you a checklist for whether a learning experience includes attention, practice, feedback, and transfer; you should be able to explain how your designs support each, even if you never label them publicly.

Action mapping deserves special attention. Developed by Cathy Moore, it starts with a clearly defined business goal, identifies the high-priority actions people must perform to reach it, and designs interventions around those actions. It is especially valuable in portfolios because it proves you can connect learning design to real performance outcomes. The through line across all of these: strong instructional design usually means removing content, not adding more. Every element should serve a clear instructional or performance purpose, and you should be able to defend it when asked "why did you do this?" in your process write-up or an interview.

Step 2: Learn the technical skills

Most instructional design roles require some technical proficiency, not because tools are the whole job, but because you are expected to turn ideas into tangible learning experiences. The goal is enough fluency to build, iterate on, and explain portfolio projects, not to master every platform. Tool recommendations below are current as of mid-2026.

Core eLearning authoring tools (non-negotiable for most corporate roles). Platforms like Articulate Storyline 360 let you create custom interactions, branching scenarios, and practice activities without writing code. Rise 360, part of the same Articulate suite, is increasingly popular for building information-based eLearning quickly. You do not need every feature. You need to translate a storyboard into a working experience, build interactions that support practice and decision-making, and explain how your technical choices supported the learning goal. The best way to learn Storyline is to download the free trial and start building; there are plenty of free resources online as well as structured learning experiences that will get you up to speed quickly.

Visual asset editing (supporting skill). You will rarely create original graphics from scratch, but you will constantly adapt and integrate visual elements. Basic proficiency with Canva, Adobe Illustrator, or Photoshop lets you customize graphics, maintain visual consistency, and avoid default templates.

Prototyping and multimedia (situational). Figma is the top prototyping tool right now, letting you explore layouts before building in Storyline. Camtasia, Premiere Pro, and Final Cut Pro cover video editing, and Vyond is worth exploring if you want to produce educational videos quickly with a cohesive look. Use these when they genuinely support your process, not to pad your resume.

AI as a design and development accelerator. As covered above, you should be comfortable using AI to accelerate research and drafting, explore alternative approaches, and refine language, scenarios, and feedback. What matters is explaining how AI supported your process.

Advanced and optional skills. Basic web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), familiarity with learning data standards like xAPI, and general LMS awareness (see how to use an LMS) are valuable depth, not entry requirements. If I had to pick one optional skill with massive upside, it would be agentic coding (sometimes called "vibe coding"): commanding AI coding agents like Claude Code to build complete software solutions. You will still need a technical foundation, but it opens doors that authoring tools alone cannot.

If this list feels short, that is intentional. Focus on the skills that support strong portfolio projects, then deepen your toolkit based on the roles you pursue.

Step 3: Learn visual design and composition

Visual design strongly influences how quickly your content is understood and how professional your work feels at first glance. Hiring managers form an impression of a portfolio in seconds, and visual clarity determines whether they keep reviewing.

You do not need to become a graphic designer. Overly decorative design often hurts learning. You need clear, intentional composition, and four principles get you most of the way there:

This worked for me personally. I built my early consulting business almost entirely from LinkedIn. By optimizing my profile and engaging regularly, I grew a six-figure eLearning business directly out of my master's program.

Effective networking usually looks like sharing and discussing portfolio work, engaging with others' projects, asking thoughtful questions, and showing up consistently over time.
