Smoking Kills eLearning Interaction

This interactive eLearning project is designed to help people quit smoking.

I designed this project as a submission to eLearning Heroes Challenge #172: Create an eLearning interaction using only black and white.

Process

Since I needed to keep my project in line with the prompt, I brainstormed topics that are associated with shades of black and white. I came up with smoke, and from there, I decided to create an anti-smoking interaction.

I sourced content from cdc.gov, then I considered the art direction, interactivity, and design.

I decided to use a minimal approach to design, but at the same time, I wanted to create an engaging experience.

So, I used this project as an opportunity to improve my graphic design and animation skills. I created a cigarette in Adobe Illustrator, then I animated smoke plumes rising from it using Adobe Animate. I also created a cigarette pack in Illustrator.

I used the animated cigarette as the "next button" for the course, and I incorporated drag-and-drop interactions to reinforce putting out cigarettes and throwing them away.

You can view the full interaction in the video below, but keep in mind that the final product is animated more smoothly than what you see in the video.

Takeaways

This project helped me build confidence in my graphic design and animation skills. It also showed me that I could take a simple prompt and create an engaging, interactive eLearning experience that can teach people content and reinforce behavior.

Going forward, I've been able to use this graphic skillset to support many projects, and I am always looking for ways to make stale content more interactive.
